Oil Palm Research

  Oil palm is one of the crops with the highest oil production efficiency in the world. The palm oil yield could reach about 8-9 ton/ha, total palm oil yield about 65000 thousand in the world, and play an important role for consumption palm oil because it accounted for 1/3 for the total the oil yield in the world. The Self-sufficiency of edible oil is only about 32.2% in China and import 6000 thousand tons palm oil. Therefore, almost twenty percent were palm oil for the resource of edible oil.

  In order to improve the self-sufficiency of edible oil and improve the yield of oil palm, the new variety selection and breeding , high-yield cultivation, under-forest economy, pest and disease control, palm oil processing were deeply studied by Oil Palm Group, Coconut Research Institute, CATAS. More than forty scientific research projects including national natural science foundation of China, the state forestry administration’s 948 and Hainan provincial key projects were presided,one project passed the Hainan Province Science and Technology Achievement Appraisal ; two ministry of agricultural standards and seven Hainan provincial standards were set;twelve item of national monopolies authorization were granted; published more than sixty papers, and more than ten of which were SCI paper. In recent years, our group introduced excellent germplasm and varieties from Africa、Southeast Asia and South America zone, and new varieties that were suitable for the tropical area in China would be cultivated on the basis of the adaptability of oil palm. On the other, some critical technologies for the development of oil palm industry were studied , then integrated and applied for the oil palm plantation aboard. We provide strong technical supporting for Chinese enterprises “Going Global” for develop oil palm industry abroad.

  Oil Palm Research Department

  Oil Palm Research Department is mainly engaged in introduction and selection new variety of oil palm; Collection, preservation and identification germplasm; breeding and propagation of excellent varieties; high-yield cultivation and Industry economics. There are nine scientists and technicians, which include three senior staffs and four with doctoral degree.

Research Achievements:

  1.Fundamental biological researches on high yield and cold resistance of oil palm

  

  Focus on fundamental biological researches on high yield and  cold resistance of oil palm were studied, the diversity of yield characters, expression and validation of yield related gene, physiological basis of high yield ; the responding mechanism of oil palm to low temperature from physiology and biochemistry, cell biology and molecular level were further studied.

   

  2. Research on oil palm seedling breeding technology

  Research on the key technologies of oil palm seed processing, seed germination, sowing and seedling stage management that improved the germination rate of seeds and cultivated excellent seedlings for oil palm production.

   

  3.Study on the mode of planting and raising under oil palm plantation

  Research on the pattern of watermelon, pineapple, peanut and pasture between oil palm plantations, using pasture to raise sheep, improve economic efficiency and save management costs.
