On June 7, Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Hainan Province issued the "Notice on Identifying the First Batch of Provincial Agricultural Germplasm Resources Protection Institutions " (Qiong Nong Zi [2021] No. 168), Arecanut Germplasm Resources Nursery of Coconut Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CRICATAS) was identified as the first batch of provincial agricultural germplasm resource protection units.

 CRICATAS has carried out the collection and preservation of arecanut germplasm resources and related research work since its establishment in 1979. The arecanut germplasm resource nursery has covered more than 1.5 hectares. The construction was completed in 2006 and the infrastructure is relatively complete. Up to now, the nursery preserves 113 domestic and foreign germplasm resources. Relying on this nursery, the new arecanut variety "Reyan No. 1" passed the national examination and approval in 2014 and is our country's first arecanut variety. Recently, through resource identification, evaluation and screening, two new arecanut lines, "Short Internode" and "Slender Stem" had been selected, which will make a positive contribution to changing the single cultivars in our country and promoting the sustainable development of the arecanut industry.

 The selection of the provincial germplasm resource nursery reflects the agricultural authority of Hainan Province pay high attention to the germplasm resources of arecanut. It has the ability to further standardize the management of arecanut germplasm resource nursery, promote the mutually benefit sharing and efficient utilization of arecanut resources, and it is of great significance to speed up the process of cultivating new varieties. Coconut Research Institute will live up to its mission and do good job in the collection, preservation, identification, evaluation and innovative utilization of arecanut germplasm resources, making contributions to the development of arecanut seed industry in Hainan Province.
