On December 2, an online training course was conducted in Haikou of China, in which Prof. TANG Longxiang from Coconut Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Tropical Agriculture Sciences(CRI,CATAS) presented a subject of Coconut High-yielding Cropping Systems of Cambodia .

Coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) is an important subsistence crop and commercial oil crop in, largely coastal, tropical regions which has been grown in more than 93 countries and supports the livelihoods of millions of people. Coconut is known as “the tree of life”, providing food, drink, shelter and raw materials for industries. In this training course, Prof. TANG principally introduced coconut germplasm resources around the world, typically to the particular planting materials in China and Cambodia. And then trying to find the way of high-yielding plantation establishment in Cambodia. Besides, many typical technologies were discussed, such as controlled pollination, cross-breeding to obtain excellent hybrid varieties, embryo culture, tissue culture, seed selection, seedling culture, cultivation practices, maintenance of plantations, nutrition diagnosis and fertilization for the high coconut production in Cambodia.

In this training course, Prof. TANG also introduced Chinese coconut product markets and the import policies and regulations, etc. He encouraged Cambodian farmers to plant much more coconut trees and then made more coconut products to export to China, during the special interactive questioning link, when trainees spontaneously participated in the classroom online in the training course.

This training course involved 30 trainees from Cambodia, including policy makers, farmers, teachers and students, etc. which was a part of Online Training Course on technologies of Tropical Agriculture between China(Hainan) and Cambodia (November 28th—December 2th, 2021, Haikou, China)  organized by Haikou Experimental Station(Institute of Tropical Fruit Tree Research) of Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences(CATAS).
