The Opening Ceremony of the Training Course on Tropical Crops Planting Technology for South Pacific Island Countries Kicks off

The opening ceremony of the training course on Tropical Crops Planting Technology for South Pacific Island Countries kicked off in Wenchang city of Hainan province on June 1st, 2023. The course is sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and organized by the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences. During the opening ceremony, Mr. Wang Jinqiang, the Director of the Department of Commerce of Hainan Province and Mr. Liu Guodao, the Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences made speeches, with Mr. Ye Jianqiu, the Party Secretary of the Coconut Research Institute of CATAS, as the host. And also thirty-five participants from Papua New Guinea, Kiribati, Samoa, and Tonga, and other leaders from the Department of Commerce of Hainan province and the Division of International Cooperation of CATAS were present at the opening ceremony.

Mr. Wang Jinqiang, the Director of Outward Investment and Economic Cooperation Division of Hainan Provincial Department of Commerce, extended a warm welcome to all the participants of the training course. And he said that the Chinese people welcome people from all over the world to share the fruits generated from China’s rapid development. In recent years, tropical agricultural technology in Hainan has developed rapidly. A series of landmark achievements have been made in the innovation of tropical crop varieties, the prevention and control of major pests and diseases of tropical crops, and the preservation and processing of tropical crops. The training course will promote mutual exchanges on technology and cultures and bilateral relationships with participating countries through in-depth discussion with participants about the current cultivation and processing technology of tropical crops. The training course would be a good example of South-South Cooperation.

Mr. Liu Guodao, the Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, pointed out that CATAS has close cooperation with Pacific island countries in tropical agricultural science and technology for a long time. Since 2000, CATAS has sent 26 delegations to Pacific Island countries for investigation, technical assistance, project cooperation and platform construction. This training course provides a platform for the participants to exchange and share their experience in tropical crops planting technology, which will further improve the modern production technology of tropical crops in the South Pacific countries.

Mr. Liu Guodao delivered a speech

Mr. Sent William, the representative of the participants, said that China has always been a major partner of Papua New Guinea and has provided great support and assistance to his country. China has promoted the development of tropical agriculture in Papua New Guinea by spreading tropical farming techniques there. As the representative of all participants, he expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Chinese government and CATAS.

This training course will focus on the development needs of tropical agriculture in South Pacific island countries. By absorbing the new knowledge, experiences and technologies of tropical crops in China, all participants will have a better command of new tropical agriculture technologies. The training course will also enhance friendship and cooperation of tropical agriculture between China and South Pacific Island countries. It will further promote the high-quality development of tropical agriculture in the countries along the Belt and Road.
